Band of Frequencies

"Prepare to have your musical thirst quenched. Byron Bay's Band of Frequencies dabbles in the whole pallet of musical genres;

Bluesy rock drips away into skull-melting lullabies that pitter-patter like rain into jazz-fusion grooves that inevitably wander off somewhere else altogether."

  • Travis Ferre (US SURFING Magazine)

With an ethos of freedom from any limitations, Band of Frequencies draw their influences from a vast spectrum of roots, rock, reggae, soul, spiritual jazz, fusion, electronic and psychedelic styles to create their own expression. The band coined the phrases Free Soul, Cyclonic Sonics and Liberation Harmonics to describe their intentions to "allow the present moment to evolve into a sound future while reflecting a deep respect for all who have come before us." It’s this spirit that resonates within passionate music lovers who have embraced their sound. It's this essence that has lead to invitations to grace the stages of diverse festivals, at home and abroad, and record soundtracks to several internationally released surf films.

Shannon Sol R. Carroll leads the band on guitar and vocals. His distinctive guitar playing has featured in many well known groups of different styles over the years. A founding member of Afro Dizzi Act and The Visitors, he has also recorded and toured with the Resin Dogs, Banawurun, H-Foundation and Soul Prism to name a few. Joining him to create the core of the band are two old friends and long time collaborators. Oj Newcomb is a phenomenal electric and double bass player who brings an underwater canyon of depth and groove to the band. Together with Mark Henman’s mind blowing beats and intricate electronic influenced breaks on drums they form a cohesive and explosive trio that soars beyond the sum of its parts.

There are plenty of accomplished musicians out there. But only a few manage to attain a state where they become a finely tuned antennae to swirling cosmic forces, channeling unseen spiritual energies and transforming a live music performance into a transcendental experience. I know, I’m gushing, but I just happen to believe Band of Frequencies and their other-worldly frontman are that good. Catch them if you can. - Tim Baker (Surfing World)

Oka

The Oka sound is deeply rooted in the laid back coastal style of our home. I guess it makes people feel how they do when they visit here..chillaxed. Here is a collection of words that we put to together because we always get asked to describe our music: "a fusion of eclectic world sounds, roots, dub, reggae, jazz and organic electronica"... yep it's a lot of words. My favourite description though comes from a new Oka fan in Canada: "i have to say, your music is like nothing i've ever heard. love it! techno-folk-aboriginal-jungle-hippie-rock? damn."
